Bloomex honours Daniel Nestor as Team Canada fires up for next year

This past weekend was a Canadian tennis lover's dream! A nail-biting Davis Cup by BNP Paribas play-off tie between Canada and Netherlands, superb athleticism and a heart-warming tribute to a Canadian tennis legend. What more could you ask for?

How about a win for the home team? You've got it!

Canada clinched its spot in the world group for the Davis Cup Finals qualifier set for February 2019.

Denis Shapovalov won his match against Robin Haase and Milos Raonic dominated 27 year-old rookie Scott Griekspoor in a 3-1 win to advance Canada to the Finals qualifier.

Daniel Nestor played the final match of his career, his 53rd Davis Cup tie. He has represented Canada more times than any other player in history. Teamed up with Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil, the duo eventually lost against Matwe Middelkoop and jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands.

In an emotional farewell, Nestor thanks his fans, family and teammates for all the support during his outstanding 26-year career. He received a standing ovation and lots of cheers as he fondly remembered his time as one of Canada’s tennis greats.

Nestor was also welcomed into the Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame in a heart-warming ceremony. To make it extra special, his two daughters presented him with a plaque and bouquet of flowers from Bloomex to mark the occasion.

As a proud sponsor of Tennis Canada, Bloomex supplied all florals for the venue as well including tropical plants for the court, stunning arrangements for hotel rooms and elegant centrepieces for the VIP lounge.

Good luck to Team Canada at the qualifiers in February!

Celebrating women at the Heart & Stroke Red Dress Gala

Bloomex had so much fun sponsoring the 7th annual Heart & Stroke Red Dress Gala at the Palais des Congres de Gatineau on August 25, 2018. The gala honours the dedicated volunteers and fundraisers who work tirelessly to help the Heart & Stroke Foundation raise money for important heart disease research.

Femininity, force, courage and determination are the driving forces behind the Red Dress Gala. Every women there had a remarkable story to tell about her experience with heart disease and stroke. Simply saying these women are brave is a massive understatement.

Our long-stemmed red roses were handed out at the event to everyone who attended as an added thank-you for their commitment to raising money and awareness for heart disease.

"The Red Dress represents women's courage and passion and their power for change as they share the truth with others and raise awareness about the importance of heart health in women," said Jo-Anne Swanson, heart survivor and lead volunteer at Heart & Stroke.

Each lady looked absolutely stunning in red and we couldn’t have been more proud to be part of such a wonderful evening.

See you next year!

Honouring a tennis legend

Bloomex was honoured to be a part of Daniel Nestor’s retirement ceremony prior to Rogers Cup, which took place August 5-12, 2018. The star-studded gala took place at Roy Thomson Hall as the tennis world watched one of its best be inducted into the Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame.

Our talented florists created elegant and trendy centrepieces of succulents and cacti to accent the sophisticated decor. They were simple, streamlined and let the guest of honour shine!

Nestor is one of Canada’s most decorated tennis players winning 12 grand-slams, an Olympic gold medal, 95 titles and was No.1 in doubles for 108 weeks. He also has an appointment to the Order of Canada and a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. No wonder the CBC considers him the ‘Wayne Gretzky of tennis’

Nestor will play his final match at Davis Cup by BNP Paribas in September when the Netherlands come to Toronto. He will continue to work with Tennis Canada next year and influence the next generation of tennis greats.

Help Support Stroke Month!

June is Stroke Month and Bloomex Canada is proud to be offering a special bouquet with 15% of sale going directly to  the Heart & Stroke Foundation (HSF) to support life- changing research.

The Heart & Stroke Purest Love Bouquet is an elegant combination of white lilies, alstroemeria, hydrangea and carnations. It was designed to pay tribute to those who fell victim to heart disease and stroke.

Bloomex will also provide a two dollar donation at checkout option for the month of June, helping fund research, which this year is focusing on women's stroke care and prevention.

Strokes are more deadly for women than men due to unique sex and gender factors so the HSF has developed The Ms. Understood initiative to help improve women’s heart health through research and healthcare programs.

They are advancing sex and gender based analysis, funding a community of scientists to improve expertise in women's heart health and expanding knowledge of at risk populations such as Indigenous women and South East Asian Women.

By doubling the dollars they invest in research for women's heart health, they can help save hundreds of the women we love. Please help support this amazing initiative when you shop at bloomex.ca.

The Purest Love Bouquet will be available for the remainder of 2018!

Heart attacks are more deadly for women than men due to unique gender factors so the HSF has developed The Ms. Understood initiative to help improve women’s heart health through research and healthcare programs. Flower of the Month: The Rose

Since the official flower of June is the rose, we thought it would be irresponsible if we didn’t share some fun facts and industry secrets about everyone’s favourite bloom.

Let the knowledge grow!

Fun Facts:

  • Roses have prickles, not thorns which grow much deeper. Prickles can be easily removed by a rose stripper, paper towel or gardening gloves.

  • The oldest living rose grows on the Hildesheim Cathedral in Hildesheim Germany and is over 1000 years old. In 1945 allied bombers destroyed the cathedral but the roots of the plant remained intact and grew strong once again.

  • The Overnight Sensation was the first rose to travel space in 2002. It's also considered one of the world's most fragrant roses.

  • Rose hips (the berry of the rose) contain lots of Vitamin C and is used in many jams and marmalades.

  • There are over 100 species of roses in many, many colours. Black is unfortunately not one of them. Black roses are in fact a very deep red hue.

  • The world’s most expensive rose is the Juliett, taking 15 years and 5 million dollars to create.

Tips & Tricks:

  • Place the stem of any drooping rose in boiling water for one minute to pop air bubbles that are preventing your flowers from drinking.

  • Roses have guard petals that help protect the inner petals from the elements. Florists will not remove them so as not to damage your bouquet. Gently pluck them (all 5) and your roses will show off their fresh petals underneath.

  • Continually pluck off wilting and dead petals. These petals may fall into the water and start to rot which can cause bacteria in the water to multiply and affect the life of your bouquet.

  • Cut your flowers on an angle. Cutting your stems straight across will crush them and make it harder for them to drink.

So many reasons to love roses! Search some beautiful gift options here.
