Perfect Holiday Poinsettias

Supreme Poinsettia Basket
The holiday season is here, and for many of us, we associate the beautiful Poinsettia plant with this special time of year. Native to Central America, this vibrant plant flowers during the winter in an area of southern Mexico. The ancient Aztecs called them 'cuetlaxochitl' and had several uses for them. They used the flowers (which are actually special types of leaves called bracts) to make a purple dye for clothes and cosmetics. They also used the white latex sap from the plant as a medicine to treat fevers.

We know about poinsettias today largely due to the first ambassador from the U.S. to Mexico. In 1825 Joel Roberts Poinsett (that's why we call them Poinsettias) brought some plants back to his greenhouses in South Carolina. He began growing them and sending them to friends and botanists. These friends shared and sold the plant and their popularity grew quickly. Their cheerful and festive colours bring us joy during the winter months and the holiday season.

Bloomex Supplies Flowers for Skate Canada Internationals

Our delightful duties as Official Florist of Skate Canada continued last weekend in Lethbridge, Alberta. Bloomex was proud to supply all the flowers and gifts required at the very exciting and prestigious Skate Canada Internationals, which were held at Enmax Centre from October 30 to November 1, 2015.

Olympic skaters and international champions arrived in Canada to compete for the top spots over a very exciting weekend, with TSN and CBC providing television coverage.

This exciting event saw the return of Canadian champion and Olympic medal winner Patrick Chan. Chan, who is also three-time world champion, took a break last season but triumphantly returned to competition at the Internationals—with a very enthusiastic media and fan following! He captured gold in the men's competition, edging out Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu who took silver.

‘’It was a high stress and challenging competition for me,’’ said Chan. ‘’I didn’t feel good in the warm –up and I was scared about going on. But I talked it through with my coach Kathy Johnson.  I went out there and skated because I enjoy it and hopefully I can be consistent throughout the season.’’ Click to watch the full Patrick Chan interview.

Reigning world champions Meaghan Duhamel and Eric Radford of Canada won the pairs, while Canada's Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje won the ice dance. American Ashley Wagner took gold in women's singles, while Canada's Gabby Daleman finished fifth.

Double Death Spiral at the SCI Exhibition Gala

Bloomex was very proud to provide all venue flowers, dinner centrepieces, VIP gift baskets and hotel bouquets, in addition to the beautiful medallist bouquets for the winners on the podium.

Skate Canada requested a red and white theme, with dinner centrepieces to be white, cream with touches of brown.

Our team came up with some gorgeous designs that were enjoyed by fans and skaters alike. The medalist bouquets were a lovely mix of white spider mums, red chiffon ribbon and aspidistra leaves and featured well during the exciting (and televised) winners ceremony!

You can view the Bloomex bouquets in the many photos above. Bloomex looks forward to the next exciting event: the Skate Canada Challenge competition in Edmonton on the weekend of December 3. See you there!
